Nostalgia

Summer’s languishing end

Makes me a child again

I have just become aware

Of this thing called Time

I am realizing suddenly

That Forever is so brief

That life is coming to claim me

The hours are no longer mine

My feet are cold standing

On the sun-drenched asphalt

My hands are dirty clutching

A partially-deflated basketball

I am looking down the driveway

Into the advancing evening

Which approaches with another night

Another day and then I must go

To school where I must wear

What everyone else wears

And talk to strangers

And do all kinds of things

I don’t want to do

I am caught in this moment

Where play gave way to preoccupation

Where pleasure became secondary

The crest of an unwilling wave

That carried me through years

Of doing all kinds of things

I didn’t want to do

It’s this moment I recall

When the nights grow cool

And the hot days fail to obscure

The coming autumn

  1. This brings back so many memories of my childhood 😊. My summers were spent riding my bike 🚲, running through fields, hiking through the forest and sitting along a brook full of trout 🥰. Even now when I’m in the forest I need only to close my eyes and take a deep breath and those memories come rushing back 😌 !! How ever, two things come to mind that have changed. School no longer interrupts those moments and I no longer hear the backyard bell 🔔 that my Mother would ring telling me…… suppers on the table 🥲. Beautifully written Amy 💗
